Level four: Tanhauzer Gate
FROZEN CAVES: When this level loads, Lara will find herself in freezing water, so you better hurry up. Don't swim forward, but swim immediately to the right (it's easy to overlook this tunnel), and follow the flooded cave to a lake where you can surface and climb out of the water on a small chunk of ice. Turn to the right (west), stand on the highest part of the ice (just in case), hop back and take a running jump to grab the crack in the wall. Shimmy to the left around the perimeter until you can pull up in the crawlspace.
Follow the tunnel to a small cave. In the far left corner there is an opening with a slope. Slide backwards and grab the edge. Shimmy to the left, pull up onto the slanted rock and back flip into the tunnel behind. Carefully walk through this tunnel to avoid two icicles falling down from the ceiling. Turn left at the end, jump forward to grab the monkey swing above and monkey swing to the other side. Once there, hang against the wall, release the grab and quickly press Action again to grab the crevice below. Shimmy to the right and pull up into the opening.
Go forward and turn right. Take a look at the lake below and to the right and proceed forward. Once inside a small cave, turn right and climb the ladder to the upper level. Take a running jump to land on the icy bridge to the left, then another running jump to land on the ledge ahead (south). Go to the left and jump into the rocky alcove. Turn left (north), walk to the wall, jump up to grab the slanted rock above, pull up, back flip and roll in mid air to grab the slanted rock behind you. Shimmy to the right until you can pull up on a flat rock. Turn around and take a running jump to grab the ladder, and climb up. Climb the rocks to the right and grab the monkey swing above. Monkey swing all the way to the other side, drop and grab the crack below, shimmy to the right around the corner and pull up into an icy tunnel. Go out to the frozen lake and shoot two snowy leopards. Don't run around a lot while shooting or else you might get splashed by two huge snowy balls falling from above. A flyby will cut in, showing a soldier above, and Lara will say: "Oh great, not again!". Draw a better weapon, the Pistol is the best, and shoot the soldier who will open fire on Lara.
Go to the south-east corner of the lake. There is a rock with an opening behind it. Jump with Action to land on that rock and crawl into the opening behind. Lit a flare if necessary and follow the tunnel to a pit with spikes. Take a running jump over the pit and immediately back flip to get out of the way of another snowy boulder. Jump across the pit again and proceed to a crawlspace. On the other side you'll see an opening to the left and some icy spikes in front of it. Walk through the spikes and press Action to climb into the opening, losing just a tiny bit of Lara's health in the process. Go to the end of the passage and through the opening, go left and climb the ladder.
Above the frozen lake go left (south) and take a running jump from the jutting ledge to the other side of the lake. Take the LMP to the left and immediately back flip to get out of the way of another avalanche. Jump back across the gap and this time take the other way (east) and shoot another soldier in the way. Follow the path to a fork intersection (in official walkthrough another snowy leopard is mentioned here, but in my game it never showed up, although I played this game for dozens of times). In the following flyby you'll see another monastery heavily guarded by soldiers.
OUTSIDE THE MONASTERY: After the flyby go left to a pit with ladder. Take a diagonal running jump over the pit to land on a flat rock to the left. At the intersection go forward (west) and around the snow to some crates (according to the official walkthrough, another leopard should appear here, but it never happened in my game). Shoot two crates and take flares and Monastery Key hidden beneath them. And yes, that third crate is full of TNT and you'll need to blast it away later. Return to the intersection and the pit with the ladder, take a running jump diagonally to the left, to land on the snow above the ladder, and climb down the ladder. Shoot the box there to find a LMP (and observe the frozen alien in the lake below). Climb up the ladder, go forward to the monastery and kill two guards. Take the Uzi clips one of them leaves behind.
The staircase at the front of the monastery is divided into three parts. Go up the right staircase and into the backyard. Shoot crates there to find more flares and Uzis. Return to the front of the monastery, but don't go down the stairs yet. Use your key in the keyhole on the wall to open the door of the monastery. Go down the stairs and go up the middle staircase, to enter the monastery.
INSIDE THE MONASTERY: Once inside, collect a SMP lying on a wooden block to the right, and Uzi clips to the left of the doorway. Proceed through the corridor to the left, to emerge to an intersection. To the right there is a golden keyhole for which you don't yet have the key. To the left there is a closed trapdoor. Straight ahead there is a movable block. Push it to the end (three times!). Hop back twice and go to the left and around the corner, until you reach that movable block again. Pull it backwards, go around to the other side of the block, push it to the end, go around once again and push it in the corner, where a floor tile has a different pattern. After pushing the block, turn right and go towards the ceiling trapdoor you've just opened. Climb the ladder in the opening to the upper level.
UPPER LEVEL - You'll emerge in the room with four movable block. This puzzle is quite easy: there are also four alcoves in the corners of the room. Two blocks are patterned like the first half of the room walls, the other two blocks are patterned like the second half of the room walls. You have to match the pattern, i.e. to push/pull a block into an alcove so the pattern on the block and the pattern on the wall match. Just remember: the open side of each block goes outside, not inside the alcove. Solve this puzzle and you'll open the door next to the entrance. Go through and climb the ladders.
On the balcony jump up to grab the monkey swing and traverse to the other side. Enter the room beyond and go to the right. Pull the lever in the alcove to the right to open the door in the room with movable blocks. This door is timed and you have to be very fast. Immediately roll and run forward, steering to the left. Sprint through the doorway, steer to the left again, run off the balcony, and sprint through the door. If you fail, return upstairs, pull the lever twice to reopen the door and try again (or save before pulling the lever, and should you fail, reload that save and try again). In the room behind the timed door find a button on the wall to the right to open the door on the opposite wall and go through.
On the balcony outside the monastery go right and take the Basement Key. Return to the room inside, go towards the door on the opposite wall and press the button next to it twice to open it. Go through the room with movable blocks, then straight ahead in the passage with ladder and climb down to the ground level. Go forward, take the first left, then the second left, and use the key in the golden keyhole to open that trapdoor in the opposite hallway (west). Go there and climb the ladder down to the basement.
THE BASEMENT: In the shallow pool stay close to the wall to the right, and jump over the first blade. Just around the corner to the right there is another blade. Jump over it, too. Between the second and the third blade there is an alcove with a ladder to the right. Go in and climb the ladder to the upper room. On the opposite wall you'll find a movable block. Push it all the way, enter the room to the right and pull the lever on the wall. Return down the ladder to the passage with blades, jump over the third blade and enter the big room where you will find the First Tibetan Jewel. Taking it will make that TNT crate you saw explode. Go back to the ground level via the passage with blades and up the two ladders.
When you climb up through the trapdoor, go right, then turn right again, and go outside the monastery. Turn left after the stairs, follow the path to the intersection, turn right and approach the edge of the pit with the ladder. Take a diagonal running jump to the right over the pit. Go straight ahead, shoot two soldiers and take shotgun shells from one of them. Go into the tunnel revealed after the explosion. Keep close to the wall to the left, go down the rocks (to the right there are deadly spikes) to the big gate.
Go left into the room, and then into the far left corner. Turn to face the wall to the left (south), jump up and grab the crack above. Shimmy to the left around the corner and pull up onto the ledge above. Flip the first lever, safety drop to the ground, go back to the gate and enter the opposite room. In the middle of this room there is a slanted block. To the left and right of it there are two raised wooden platforms. Stand on any of them and side flip onto the slanted block. Bounce off and grab the ledge above. Pull up and flip the second lever to open the big gate. Safety drop and enter the big gate to the right.
TANHAUSER GATE: Cross the stone bridge towards the central gates. At the end turn right, walk to the edge and take a running jump into the opening. Walk down the stares, taking care not to fall onto the spikes. Before you go down the ramp to the right, take a running jump over the spikes and take shotgun shells. Jump back, go down the ramp and claim the Second Tibetan Jewel. Return up the ramp, take a running jump back to the bridge, go left towards the entrance, and then to the right towards the ladders on the wall. Take a running jump to grab them, climb down onto the slanted block and slide down to the ground.
The big gate to the left (west) has two windows on both its sides. Jump into those windows and place two Tibetan Jewels in the receptacles to open this gate. Go through and down each of two ramps to a room with a pool. Jump into water and swim through the passage. Turn left and keep as low as possible to avoid the blade, swim to the end of the passage and pull the underwater lever to open an underwater door in the next tunnel. Return back to the intersection and swim to the left (or go back to the pool to take some air if necessary, although it is quite easy to complete this whole sequence in one breath). Follow the twisted tunnel to a small room where you can surface and go out of the water.
THE MAZE: Turn your back towards the water and crawl into the opening to the left (north-east). Stand up in the underground tunnel and go to the first intersection. Go left and follow the long twisted tunnel to the other intersection. This time go right (south) and around the corner, and pull the lever to open a door elsewhere. Turn around, go back to the intersection and head to the right (north) to a short tunnel. Climb into an opening to the right, enter the man-made building and pick up the torch from the alcove to the right. Return back to the intersection and turn right around the corner (north-west). Follow the twisted tunnel back to the first intersection, and turn left. Follow this tunnel to an alcove to the left, drop the torch and pick up shotgun shells from the skeleton in the alcove. Take the torch again and keep going down the tunnel to yet another intersection.
Turn right (west), then the second right (north). At the next intersection go left (west), and finally turn right (north) at the last intersection. Proceed carefully through the twisted tunnel, and take a running jump over the pit with icy spikes. Go to the end of the tunnel and lit your torch at the burner. Now you need to go back over the pit with spikes, to the intersection. Turn left (east), and to the right (south) at the next intersection. You'll see some gray movable block inside this tunnel, to the right. Drop the torch on the floor between two pushable blocks.
Now you have to move four pushable blocks to open two tunnels, one leading to the shaft, the other one leading to the boulder slope. Please refer to the map below this text, given to clarify the solution explained here.
Push the block on the right (1) all the way to the end (against the block 3). Go left and turn left again, and approach the block (2) from the back side. Push it into the hallway with your torch. Turn around, go to the intersection, turn right, then right again, and return into the hallway with your torch. Turn right towards the block (2) and push it into the alcove.
Return to the block (1) and pull it once. Turn around, return to the hallway with the torch, turn right, then right again, and once more, turn to the right and approach the block (1). Push it into the alcove.
Approach the block (3) and pull it four times. You'll end up in the hallway with the torch. Go left, turn right, then right again towards the block (1), and again turn right to approach the block (3) from the back. Push it into the hallway with the torch. Turn around, go to the intersection, turn left, then left again and go back into the hallway with the torch. Turn left and go to the block (3). Push it into the corner.
After pushing the block (3) go left, then left again and approach the block (4). Pull it twice. Turn around, go towards the block (1) and turn right. Back into the hallway with the torch, turn right again, and enter the hallway to the right, to approach the block (4) from the back side. Pull it once. That's it.
Prayer Flag. Climb down the ladders and down the shaft, and go get your torch.
THE BOULDERS SLOPE: Enter the hallway where you found the block (4) and better save your game at the base of the two ramps ahead. Run up the right slope, and as soon as the boulder drops down, side flip to the left. Don't go any further up the left slope. Just wait for the boulder on the right slope to fall down, side flip onto it and go to the top. At the top of the slopes ignite two oil pools to the left and to the right of the door, and the door will open. You don't need the torch any more, so you can drop it. Go through the door which will close behind you.
CAVE WITH OIL POOL AND BURNERS: At the entrance go right and take a diagonal standing jump on the ledge in the corner. Back flip onto the arch above the doorway, bounce off and grab the crevice on the wall. Shimmy to the left until you can pull up. Crawl into a small room with a central pillar. Climb the ladder attached to the pillar and follow the tunnel to the opening high above the cave with oil pool. On this ledge walk to the left a little bit, turn to face the sandy ledge opposite the opening (west) and take a running jump to land there. Flip the lever to open one door below. Turn your back towards the lever, walk to the edge and sidestep to the left. This is the spot where you can safety drop to the lower level.
Turn to face the entrance. The door you've just opened is on the right (west). You have to jump onto two burners to get there, so brace yourself. Before you begin, bare in mind that you cannot grab the edges of the burners, because Lara will catch a fire from the pool below. You have to jump onto the burners directly, unfortunately. Also, the corners of the burners are safe, so you still have some hope left ;) Turn to face the first burner to the right and walk to the edge of the ledge. Pivot Lara to face directly the near right corner of the burner and take two steps back from the edge. When the flame is about to subside, take a standing jump to land on the burner. Side step or take a step back into the corner of the burner if necessary, and save your game here. Wait for the burner you're standing on to go out and take a standing jump to land in the corner of the second burner. Side flip to the left to land on the ledge with the open door and go through. Flip the lever on the wall to open the door on the opposite side of the cave (east).
Go back up the steps, but don't return to the cave with burners yet. Go towards the fire pot on the other side of the hallway. Sidestep to the left or right and jump up to grab the crawlspace above the fire pot. Crawl in and proceed to an icy cave. Climb the ladders on the other side, but not all the way to the top, and back flip onto the snowy ledge behind. Turn around and shoot the ice to break it. Enter another frozen cave, go to the other side and save before you enter the tunnel. Carefully enter the tunnel, and when the boulder drops down from above, back flip, then side flip to the left to avoid it. Now it is safe to proceed through this tunnel, so do it. Shoot another thin ice wall, go inside a small cave and take Secret #10: another Prayer Flag. Return to the cave with burners.
Walk to the outer left corner of the ledge and turn diagonally to the left to face the corner of the burner to the left. Take one step back and use Look button to face Lara squarely towards the corner of the burner. Take a standing jump to land there. Pivot Lara to the right to face the flame and side step all the way to the left, staying as close to the edge as possible. Once on the opposite side of the burner, turn left to face the ledge (north) and take a standing jump to land there.
Go to the right and to the other side of the ledge. Go to the edge of it, facing the entrance and the burner to the left. Stay close to the left edge of the ledge (this side is higher than the other), walk to the end, and take three steps back. Take a standing jump to land on the burner. Stay as close to the edge of the burner while side stepping to the far left corner. Turn diagonally to the left and pivot Lara to face squarely the corner of the ledge. Take a standing jump to land there. Enter the doorway cautiously, jump over the pool with oil and take the second Yavi'ny Artifact. Jump back over the pool and return to the cave with burners. Use the same strategy as before to get back to the ledge which is now to the right (north). Enter the doorway which is now open to activate a short flyby showing the soldiers in front of the Tanhauzer gate.
BACK TO THE GATE: Follow the tunnel to another deadly pool. Above the pool there are three steam emitters that can hurt Lara. Stand at the edge of the opening and side step all the way to the left. Watch the cycle of the left steam vent. When the steam subsides, take a running jump over the pool and climb into an opening to the left. Follow it to the end, slide down the stairs to the right and prepare for clearing the area from the goons. If you like, you can wait for the first soldier to enter and then to kill him before going out to the open. Take his LMP (he won't need it any more, trust me) and go out. Kill two more soldiers on the bridge above (Uzis are perfect for this, and Pistol is even better if you still have the ammo).
Climb the ladders on the other side, at the top of them back flip with roll in mid air to grab the bridge and pull up. Pick up two sets of Uzi clips from the dead soldiers. You can finish this level now, but if you are collecting all the secrets, better wait a couple more minutes. At the bridge go right and climb the stairs leading outside. Return to the monastery, turn left inside, go straight at the first intersection, then to the right at the second. Go down the ramp into a small room. Place two Prayer Flags in wooden receptacles to the left and right to open the door. Enter and claim Secret #11: Dharma Wheel. Return back to the gate, cross the bridge, place two Yavi'ny Artifacts on their stands to the left and right of the big gate to open it, and go through to end the level.
